VirtualBox 是一款開放原始碼的免費虛擬化軟體，可讓您在現有的作業系統上，亦即在同一台電腦上安裝多個作業系統，而且絕對不會影響到現有的作業系統。這對於想體驗其他不同作業系統的人而言，可說是一項極為方便的工具。這款軟體除了可模擬 Windows 作業系統外，還可模擬 Linux、Ubuntu、Red Hat、Fedora、OS/2 等作業系統。當然，若您要安裝 Windows 以外的其他作業系統，您必須要有這些作業系統的光碟或是映像檔。除 Windows 版本外，它還提供適用於 Linux 以及 OS X 的版本
建立虛擬電腦後必須為該虛擬電腦配置記憶體大小以及硬碟空間，在使用時會佔用掉電腦的實體記憶體和硬碟空間，因此擁有較佳的電腦硬體配備，在執行 VirtualBox 時也會有較佳的速度和效率。
儘管這款軟體內建繁體中文語系，但目前還不是很完整，因此在某些設定或操作畫面仍會以英文，或中英文混合的模式呈現。整體來說，它仍是一款相當不錯的軟體，功能不會因其為免費軟體而有所減少，而且就同類型軟體而言，它的反應速度仍然是很不錯的。倘若您正在使用 Windows，但想體驗火紅的 Ubuntu 作業系統，卻擔心把電腦搞壞；或是正在使用非 Windows 作業系統，但卻可能因為工作需要或其他因素，需要使用 Windows 作業系統，那麼這款軟體絕對是一個不錯的解決方案。

VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software.
It has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. The software also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don’t have to hack the source to write a new interface for it.
