這款軟體能即時顯示現在時間和您所在位置的星座，不管天氣好壞都能顯示出天空中所有的星座，如同一座天文館。許多功能鍵還可顯示擬真的大氣層、地表附近的霧、閃爍的星星、流星雨、黃道、赤道以及 88 個源自希臘神話的西方星座圖繪等，至於觀測日蝕、星體運行也不成問題。選擇您想要的觀測地點之後在這款軟體中所看到的就是該地點的星空。
這套軟體跨平台，可在 Windows、Mac OS X 及 Linux 作業系統上執行，不少人拿來做為教學之用。最方便的是，當您外出旅行時，Stellarium 可是觀測星空的好幫手，只要攜帶筆記型電腦，隨時隨地開啟程式、選擇區域和時間，就能比對當地的星象。

Stellarium renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. It displays stars, constellations, planets, nebulae and others things like ground, landscape, atmosphere, etc.
It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.
